The Principality Cup

History Of The Principality Cup

It is fitting that Llanelli are the holders for the first year of the principality cup as they have easily been the most successful side in the 29 seasons since the knockout cup tournament was instigated. They have won the trophy 11 times and losing finalists on a further four occasion's.

In 1971-72, the inaugard season, the competition was known as the WRU challenge cup. Neath were the first winners beating the scarlet's 15-9, but then Llanelli took over for the next four years before Newport defeated Cardiff 16-15 to take the trophy to Rhodry Parade for one and only time.
